Advantages and Disadvantages of Light Bulbs?

 

Questions that I have been asked by my Customers.

  • 1/. What are we going to do when all the conventional type of Light Bulbs are discontinued?
  • 2/. Should we stock pile the Light Bulbs that fit our light fittings so that we have them when they discontinue them?
  • 3/. Which type of Low Energy Light Bulbs can I buy that will fit and look nice in my existing light fitting?
  • 4/. Why does all the Low Energy Light Bulbs look so ugly in the light fitings.Are there any better ones that fit and look nice?
  • 5/. Which type of Light Fittings should we buy that will save electricity?
  • 6/. Are the new type of Light Fitting that take the 12 volt light bulbs better and cheaper to run than fitting the Low Energy Light Bulbs?
  • 7/. What are the advantages and disadvantages of different types of light bulbs?
  • There are so many different types of light fittings on the market today that could be install in different rooms of your home, including outside your home. These light fittings range from Outdoor Lighting, Task and Novelty Light Fittings, Floor and Table Lamps, Spotlights, Wall Lights, Flush Light Fittings, Pendant Light Fittings, Decorative Crystal Chandeliers and Decorative Chandeliers etc. Each type of light fitting is designed to take a particular type of light bulb which is designed to enhance its beauty.


    There are three main basic types of light bulbs used in light fittings found in the home.

     

    The Conventional Type of light bulbs.

    This is a 240 volt light bulb and which would include the normal general service lamp ( gls ), the candle type, the golf ball type, the Linear type, and the 240volt G9 capsule type of light bulbs etc.

    Advantages:

  • The light bulb reaches its full brightness instantly:
  • The light bulb can be dimmed using a dimmer switch.
  • The light bulb has been designed to fit into most light fitting.
  • Commonly available in most shops.
  • Inexpensive to buy.
  • The life of good quality branded light bulbs is approximately 1000 hours.
  • Disadvantages:

  • These light bulbs are conventional and not energy saving.
  • Cheaply bought light bulbs last a very sort period of time, so buy good quality branded light bulbs.

  • The Low Energy Type of Light Bulbs.

    This is a 240 volt light bulb which would include the fluorescent tubes and the compact fluorescent low energy saving light bulbs etc Although there other type which are used outside the home like mercury and sodium vapor light bulbs which we are not including.

    Advantages:

  • These light bulbs use approximately 1/5th of the energy that a conventional light bulb would consume.
  • For example for a 20 watt low energy light bulb you would give you the same light output of a 100 watts conventional light bulb.
  • Saves you money on the same equivalent conventional type of light bulb.
  • Disadvantages:

  • The light bulb take approximately 30 seconds to reaches its full brightness.
  • The light bulb light output deteriorates during its life which means you get less light as the light bulb gets older..
  • The light bulb can not be dimmed using a normal wall dimmer switch.
  • The light bulb has not been designed to fit decoratively into most light fittings and looks ugly spoiling the decorativeness of the light fitting.
  • The light bulb type is limited to the size of wattage.
  • The light bulb type increases in size as it increase its wattage.

  • The 12 volt Light Bulbs. 

    This is a 12 volt light bulb which is supplied via a 240-12 volt transformer. The type of light bulbs would include the 12 volt G4 and the GY6.35 Capsule and the 12 volt Dichroic Light Bulbs etc.

    Advantages:

  • These light bulbs use approximately 1/20th of the energy that a conventional light bulb would consume..
  • The light bulb reaches its full brightness within 1 second.
  • The light bulb is designed to fit into the designed light fitting keeping the the character of the light fitting.
  • Commonly available in most shops.
  • The light bulb can be dimmed using a specific dimmer switch.
  • The life of good quality branded light bulbs is approximately 5000 hours.
  • Disadvantages:

  • The light bulb can not be dimmed using a common dimmer switch.
  • Cheaply bought light bulbs last a very sort period of time, so buy good quality branded light bulbs.
